The collection of Amphibians at the MZS comprises some 2100 specimens:
48 are osteological samples, about 2045 are specimens in alcohol and 8
are mounted animals. They have worldwide origins and cover almost all
extant families. 386 are salamanders covering 8 of the 9 families of
Caudata, 1696 are frogs (38 families) and 9 are caecilians (5 families).The
collection periods are in their vast majority the 19th and 20th
centuries. Several Natural History agencies significantly contributed to
the 19th century entries, among which Hermann Rolle in Berlin, J.F.G.
Umlauff in Hamburg and Gustav Schneider in Basel. A number of
naturalists significantly contributed to the collection, such as the
explorer Hans Frühstorfer (1866-1922) who sent 100 frogs from South-East
Asia or the Speyer family who collected 100 specimens in Alsace and in
Germany. 41 specimens were collected by Ludwig Döderlein during his
journey in Japan 1880-1881.Ce travail a bénéficié du soutien financier du Ministère de l’Enseignement Supérieur et de la Recherche.
