This dataset represents the results of a digitization effort on the malacological collection originally assembled by Baron Enrico Pirajno di Mandralisca and housed in the Museo Mandralisca, Cefalù (Palermo, Italy).
The work performed on this collection includes attribution of new univocal specimen numbers, the photographic imaging of each sample together with any available labels, the recording of the sample information in a database and the taxonomic revision of each entry.
The database contains 2626 entries, representing 1000 taxa of specific and subspecific rank across five classes of Mollusca (Gastropoda, Bivalvia, Cephalopoda, Polyplacophora, Scaphopoda). Both local (i.e., Sicilian) and exotic species are represented.
Once published, the digitized version of this sizeable, scientifically and historically significant collection will be available for study to all, potentially offering valuable data on historical biodiversity patterns.
