ABSTRACT

Sphenoraia chujoi Lee, new species, is described. Sphenoraia rutilans (Hope) and Sphenoraia micans (Fairmaire) are redescribed and type specimens of both species and their synonyms were examined. Important diagnostic characters, including color patterns, antenna, and male and female reproductive organs, are illustrated in detail.

The genus Sphenoraia Clark, 1865 comprises 23 species distributed in the Palearctic and Oriental Regions (Wilcox 1971; Mohamedsaid 2004; Zhang et al. 2008; Beenen 2010). This genus is not common in Taiwan. Sphenoraia micans (Fairmaire, 1888) was the first species recorded from the island (Kimoto 1996). The Taiwan Chrysomelid Research Team was initiated in order to inventory all species of Chrysomelidae found in Taiwan. A number of S. micans have been collected over the course of investigating the chrysomelids of Taiwan. In the present work, the taxonomic status of the Taiwanese population of S. micans is re-evaluated by comparing these with specimens from China. In addition, a remarkable new species was found in the historical collection at the Taiwan Agricultural Research Institute. This new species is similar to Sphenoraia rutilans (Hope, 1831) in being metallic purple or blue with lateral furrows on the pronotum. The new species is described herein and compared with S. rutilans.
