Although herbarium specimens were stored at Baylor University as early as 1903, the Baylor University Herbarium was officially founded in 1967 as part of the Department of Biology at Baylor University (BAYLU). It was organized by Dr. Floyd F. Davidson in 1967, then chair of the department, with the first curator Ms. Fannie Mae Hurst-Windham. Much of the herbarium is dedicated to Texas flora, though with specimens included from Oklahoma, Louisiana, Central/South America, and China. The herbarium also houses over 200+ specimens collected by F. Lindheimer, mainly from near New Braunfels and Comanche Spring in South-Central Texas. Dr. Walter C. Holmes (1944-2023) was the long-time curator of the herbarium who specialized in the genus Mikania (Asteraceae) and the Southeastern U.S. flora. On 23 May 2026, the BAYLU herbarium was officially transferred to the Billie L. Turner Plant Resources Center at the University of Texas at Austin. Although interfiled with the TEX and LL specimens, those from BAYLU retain their separate designation (and barcodes). However, as of the transfer, BAYLU is no longer accessioning new material and is no longer active in exchange.
