The Herpetology collection at NNHC houses >23,000 cataloged specimens of reptiles and amphibians, collected from around the world, the vast majority from Israel and the Middle East. Material collection was focused on documenting species distribution and diversity. Most of the specimens are preserved in ethanol, after formaldehyde fixation, the minority are dry specimens or skeletons. Since 1994, tissue samples have been curated separately, without formaldehyde treatment, for DNA studies. Several hundred specimens, including eggshells and shed skins, await cataloging. The collection moved several times since its origins in the early 20th century and is currently housed in modern compactor-type cabinets in the Lubin building at Safra Campus, Jerusalem.
